Doom Eternal has a lot of classic elements, it's taking the gameplay back to basics. In the previous doom release there were a lot of options, like matchmaking multiplayer & map editor. Doom Eternal is more focused on the single player experience, although there is a multiplayer option, didn't play it yet, but it's only 3 players, 1 doomguy VS 2 enemies. Some new single player features are jumping, wall climbing, dashing, double jump & extensive upgrades to fit your playstyle.
And when i say focus is on single player, i meant it's done GOOD. It's so next-gen, fast paced, extremely agile, button bashing, smashing, exploding, racing, raging chainsaw, and all this mayhem is fairly easy to learn, and this is the thing about Doom, the developers used their brain to design the gameplay, something which is done a lot less since good graphics became available, but was an essential part of gaming in the past... It's almost like a beat-em-up where you can chain endless combos. Just like the original doom, doom eternal uses secrets, keys, and even the overal level design is inspired by the original level design. There's a lot of gameplay elements which make me feel like playing the original doom in 1993.
It's a tough game though, i'm playing on "hurt me plenty" and need replay every 10 minutes something.
A game which the retro gamer and single player gamer will love.
If you're into matchmaking multiplayer and a lot of customization then you'll think Doom is a game with limitations.
It lack all the extra bells most games have, but it does have very intelligently designed gameplay elements which are rarely seen in modern games.
