- Place the eggs in a single layer in a pot.
- Add enough cold water to cover the eggs by about 1 inch (2.5 cm).
- Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat.
- Bring the water to a rolling boil.
- Once the water is boiling, cover the pot and turn off the heat (for stovetops that retain heat well) or reduce it to a low simmer.
- Set a timer based on how you like your eggs:
- Soft-boiled: 4–6 minutes
- Medium-boiled: 7–9 minutes
- Hard-boiled: 10–12 minutes
- Soft-boiled: 4–6 minutes
- When the timer goes off, immediately transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water or run them under cold water.
- Let them cool for at least 5 minutes to stop cooking and make peeling easier.
- Tap the egg gently on a hard surface to crack the shell.
- Roll the egg lightly to loosen the shell, then peel it off under running water if needed.
