I have tried several modern arpgs like path of exile or diablo 3 and I find that they focus solely on the endgame experience, completely disregarding the actual game. In poe the game basically starts after act 10 is over, at maps and d3 I basically beat diablo without using a single ability on him, just normal attacks and I outhealed all of his damage through lifesteal and regen on my first play-through.
What I am searching for is an arpg that focuses more on the first hours of gameplay, like diablo 1 and 2 did. An arpg that will make me sit and consider for a moment whether I should open that next door, fearing what might be behind. Diablo 2 was the dark souls of arpgs and that is the feeling I want back.
Any recommendations?
