Lore Question : What is the “League” of Legends?

I think this is kind of a stupid question but im a fairly new player and couldnt find the answer so i was wondering, what is the League of Legends? like why are they in an arena fighting eachother etc. does the lore have nothing to do with the game at all? like is it just lore for the sake of giving the characters story? its like how apex legends have the apex games, they fight for fame and glory. in LoL what are they there for?
