Question about refunding

I'm looking to refund an iPhone for the first time. This would be my first time doing something like this. Is there anything I should know before doing this? I was planning on just shipping it to an Amazon locker near my place and grabbing it from there. I've heard phones get locked when refunded though. Is there a way around this, is it false info, or is there nothing I can do about it?
