Atm I run a 6 year old installation of Windows 10. I installed a new one 4 years ago when I did a hardware upgrade (from 1600X to 5600X and from 1070 to 3060Ti), but I kept all settings etc.

The performance has noticeably deteriorated over the past years piece by piece so I am planning to do a full new reinstall on a completely fresh SSD.

Now I wonder, should it be Windows 11 or should it be Steam OS?

I mostly do Gaming and modding (Photoshop, Blender, Hex Editing software and dedicated game editing tools, Stuff that requires DotNet5)

I assume for the Editing I‘d need Windows 11. but I assume SteamOS might be more performant for gaming as it’s less heavy by default.

But I am also concerned about older games (early 2000s), will they even run on SteamOS?

Hardware atm is: 5600X running at vanilla specs. Aorus Z570 (iirc the Aorus Master), 32GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600. Aorus 3060Ti, 650W Bitfenix Whisper M, cooled by a Fuma 2 in a Phanteks P600S case. Windows is running on a Samsung 980. I want to change that to something more Modern like an SN950.

Any help with the OS and SSD upgrade situation would be appreciated.

Not sure if SteamOS would be compatible with your GPU. Why not some other kind of Linux distro & Proton/Lutris? If you need Windows, you could do VM's or have a dual boot setup.
