the result of trying to find the smallest square that will hold 17 unit squares is this specific pattern. it's a "platonic structure of mathematics visible in all possible worlds" and that's why I adore it: this pattern is a basic pattern of the cosmos. but it lacks symmetry deeply—some may even say unsettlingly—unlike most mathematical platonic constructions. i'm not sure if that looks surprising because much of math actually has a tilt towards symmetry, or because we *focus more* on 'beautiful' math. there are typically far more patterns within even chaotic dynamics-governed objects than this.
