right now i somehow have a laptop worse than that and i feel like a 2012 mbp would be great since not only would it be an upgrade but i could also upgrade it easily down the line when i need something better

are there any downsides to this?

Make sure you swap the HDD to an SSD if you're planning to use it often. The latest macOS supporting MBP 2012 is macOS Catalina, which I don't know how many programs would be supported on that.

i likely will upgrade to an ssd as soon as i get my hands on the mbp but as for the macos version, its possible to install a later version like ventura using a patcher called opencore legacy patcher

i thought of something like that but the 2012 model is still unibody so you can easily upgrade it
