A "bomb message" circulating through WhatsApp is causing the app to crash when users open a chat with the URL wa.me/settings
When a user sends a message with the text wa.me/settings, the chat between the two people is disabled. If you try to talk to that person, the app crashes, both on the phone the link was sent from and the phone you received it from.
If you send the link to a group, it becomes inaccessible to all its members.
While WhatsApp is working on an update to fix the issue, the wa.me/settings URL should not be sent to anyone; if you receive it, it should not be opened and, if you open a chat that contains the link, close WhatsApp and reopen it.
Another trick that can be used to remove the link that is causing the problem is to access WhatsApp from a browser and delete the link.
The bug was first reported on May 27, 2023. It affects all versions of WhatsApp for Android. The bug does not affect WhatsApp for iOS.
According to specialized media, the error is due to a problem in the handling of WhatsApp deep links.
Deep links are URLs used to open specific pages or features within an app. In this case, the wa.me/settings URL tries to open the WhatsApp settings page, but the error prevents this from happening.
WhatsApp is a popular messaging app with more than 2 billion users worldwide. The error in question is causing a significant interruption of communication between its users.
