[5/20, 12:00 AM] Fresh✨: What is a geotechnical review?

A geotechnical investigation consists of gathering information about the properties of the soil and rock makeup of the property that are used when designing foundations or any other structures that require earth disturbance for any structures onsite.

What are the 4 types of geotechnical?

Geotechnical testing is conducted by site characterization, laboratory testing, and professional interpretation of data obtained to complete the design and construction of the site improvement. Tests generally fall into 4 categories, test pits, trenching, boring and in situ testing.

What is a test pit?

Test pits are holes dug prior to construction to help ensure the ground conditions are suitable for building projects. These test pits average a depth of 3-15 feet deep, and allow geotechnical engineers the opportunity to assess soil composition before officially breaking ground

What are the advantages of test pits?

They allow for a rapid examination of ground conditions across both the horizontal and vertical as the pit advances and faces exposed. The advantage of test pits compared with light-cable percussion drilling or window sampling is the relative speed with which the work can be carried out.

How are test pits done?

Test Pits will be excavated with backhoe equipment to provide detailed visual examination of near surface soil, groundwater, and bedrock conditions. Test Pit soil samples may be collected using stainless steel and/or Teflon-lined scoops, trowels, shovels, spoons, or spatulas.

What is the difference between a test pit and a borehole?

Trial pits are more cost effective than boreholes and can enable a greater profile of the soils but are generally restricted to around 3.50m depth with a standard JCB 3CX type machine. The advantages of boreholes is that greater depths can be achieved and more detailed soil and rock strengths can be recorded.

What do you mean by trenching?

Trenching in construction means creating a narrow excavation below the surface of the ground by using an earthmoving machine called a trencher. Trenches are deeper than they are wide, as opposed to a ditch, and more narrow compared to their length, as opposed to a hole or pit.

What is used for trenching?

There are four types of hand tools used for trenching. They are the SharpShooter Shovel (or Drainage Spade), a couple different types of Trenching Shovels, the new Bottom Digger clean-out scoop, and the surprising Trenching Hoe (also called a Grub Hoe).

What is the difference between excavation and trenching?
OSHA defines an excavation as any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the Earth's surface formed by earth removal. A trench is defined as a narrow excavation (in relation to its length) made below the surface of the ground.

Why is it called trench?

Introduction to the trench coat

It was adapted to be worn quite literally in the trenches; hence where the coat gets its name. It was during the Great War that this classic garment took the shape and style that so many of us still wear today. The classic style of the coat still has these military influences.

Why is trenching important?
In any construction, trenching involves the excavation of a narrow, continuous hole in the ground. The process is generally used to create footings or foundations for new structures or to install utilities such as water, sewer, or gas lines

What are the benefits of trenches

the biggest advantage of trenchers is that they make groundwork easier. ...
Improved Logistics. ...
Environmental Impacts. ...
Less Noise. ...
Safer Work.

What does so Boring mean?

causing or marked by boredom; dull and uninteresting; tiresome: to have a boring time. a boring discussion; to have a boring time. Synonyms: tedious, tiresome, dull.

How does boring work?

Boring is a subtractive manufacturing technique used to enlarge a pre-drilled or casted hole yet enhance its dimensional accuracy. The process uses a single-point cutting tool to remove material parts from the interior of a workpiece.

Last but not the least

What does in s

Examples of In-situ include national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The Ex-situ method of conservation is carried out on man-made habitats or ecosystems. Examples of Ex-situ include zoological gardens, seed banks, and gene banks.

What is the difference between in situ and ex situ testing?
In situ can refer to where a clean up or remediation of a polluted site is performed using and stimulating the natural processes in the soil, contrary to ex situ where contaminated soil is excavated and cleaned elsewhere, off site

Examples of in situ

What is in-situ Conservation, with examples? In-situ conservation is the conservation of wild animals in their natural habitats. For example, The conservation of Mountain hares in Peak District, or of Leatherback sea turtles in the Great Barrier Reef.

What is the SPT test used for?

Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is a simple and low-cost testing procedure widely used in geotechnical investigation to determine the relative density and angle of shearing resistance of cohesionless soils and also the strength of stiff cohesive soils.

What does a geotechnical review include?

A general description of the geology and soils encountered on the project, and a description of the terrain, to include drainage, erosion patterns, high water elevation, flooding, and any other specific conditions which may be of value in the design of bridges, culverts and other structures.

What is the purpose of a geotechnical review?

A geotechnical report is typically needed to obtain a building permit for a construction project, as well as to obtain appropriate insurance coverage. The reviews is vital to identify potential risks and hazards that can result in structural failures, building degradation, environmental damage, and more.

What are the benefits of geotechnical investigation?

So, why is a geotechnical investigation important?

Provides a good assessment of the ground conditions likely to be encountered;
Offers assurance that the site is suitable for its intended development or redevelopment purpose and also
Sustainable geotechnical infrastructure reduces environmental impacts and ensures long-term stability and safety. This involves using eco-friendly materials and practices that conserve natural resources and minimize carbon emissions.

What are the contributions of geotechnical engineering?

By providing essential information, monitoring potential risks, and contributing to the design and implementation of safety measures, geotechnical engineers play a crucial role in ensuring the success of mining projects while prioritizing the well-being of workers and the protection of the environment.

In conclusion
The geotechnical review is the tool used to communicate the site conditions and design and construction recommendations to the roadway design, bridge design, and construction personnel.
