I don't think only humans get depressed.  I think many animals get depressed too.  Pets like cats and dogs often get depressed, particularly when they're abused or ignored.  And zoo animals are frequently depressed, because they live in an unnatural environment.  Even if they're born in a zoo, their instinct tells them it's unnatural.

I agree completely that for humans, part of the problem is that we live in the past, present and future concurrently.

Many of the societal systems contribute to depression. The schooling system, suburban developments, lack of fulfilling work. Holistic change needs to be made in all areas so that humans can live better.

Some research suggests that neuroticism is inherited in the same way we inherit other traits, such as height. So, to a certain extent, we may be born with a tendency towards this personality trait. I advise you to learn more about what is neuroticism here
