The employees of the Bureau of Special Technical Measures (BSTM) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, together with the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Rostov Region, are carrying out activities aimed at preventing the theft of funds from citizens of the Russian Federation using SIM boxes.
"According to available information, a previously convicted man, on the instructions of a curator who is presumably in Ukraine, rented an apartment in Rostov-on-Don. There he installed two SIM boxes designed for the simultaneous operation of a large number of SIM cards. The scammers called citizens, gained their trust and found out their personal data. This allowed them to subsequently gain access to personal accounts on the State Services portal or in banking applications.
For the purpose of conspiracy, each SIM card was used for no more than a day. In addition, the defendant changed his residential addresses. However, this did not help him. The employees of the Bureau of Special Technical Measures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, using innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence and neural networks, established the location of the suspect. “In cooperation with operatives of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Rostov Region, he was detained in Rostov-on-Don,” said the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Irina Volk.
In the apartment rented by the man, two SIM boxes with 128 SIM cards each, 2,500 SIM cards of various mobile operators, antenna-feeder equipment and other items of evidentiary value were found.
During the analysis of the operation of these devices, the police identified 15 thousand calls to subscriber numbers of Russian citizens for the implementation of illegal actions.
“An investigator of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Rostov Region opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under paragraph “g” of part three of Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The preliminary investigation is ongoing,” added Irina Volk.
