In Australia, 24-year-old Catherine Kolivas kidnapped a member of the Saudi royal family. To be released, the girl asked for $40,000 in bitcoins. It is reported by the Daily Mail.
According to the case file, Kolivas and three of her accomplices found the victim on a dating app, arranging a date. After the meeting, the woman asked her companion to accompany her home, where her accomplices were waiting.
Then the royal person was beaten, tied up with cable ties and threatened to cut off her fingers with a knife.
The kidnapped turned out to be a crypto trader, so he paid for his freedom with bitcoins worth about $40,000, which he transferred through a friend. The criminals also stole the keys to the house of a member of the royal family, from where they took designer clothes, Playstation 5 and several iPhones.
After that, the victim was released. He immediately went to the police and went to the hospital with wounds to his head and wrists.
Kolivas pleaded guilty to kidnapping, extortion, reckless bodily harm, theft and possession of weapons. She faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. However, the Australian court sentenced only 30 months of corrective labor.
The judge ruled that Kolivas had proved the existence of "exceptional circumstances" that are legally required for release from imprisonment. These reasons include: young age, difficult childhood, poor mental health, prospects for rehabilitation, and the death of her brother during the hearings.
Other organizers of the incident also did not receive real sentences, offering "sincere apologies" to the victim.
