A British design and engineering company, Arup, was scammed out of $25 million by fraudsters using deepfake technology. A finance worker in their Hong Kong office was tricked into sending the money after participating in a video call with what he thought were the company's chief financial officer and other staff members. These individuals were actually deepfake recreations that looked and sounded like his real colleagues. The scam involved 15 transactions totaling 200 million Hong Kong dollars. Arup has reported the incident to the Hong Kong police, who are investigating. Despite the fraud, Arup's financial stability and internal systems remain unaffected.
