so when I tried to link an image using this the image tool it would look perfectly fine in "preview" but as soon as I posted the reply it would something like this.

Its actually very easy

Go to an image hosting site (you can use https://imgbb.com/ for example) and upload your picture(s)
Right click on the uploaded picture and click on "Copy image adress". The copied link should end with the following extensions: .jpg / .png / .gif
Now simply use the image bbcode here below. Replace your link with XXXXXXXXXXXX

Code:

Example:
