The INI Organized Crime Department and PCCOCS prosecutors have arrested two members of an international criminal group accused of fraud and money laundering. The group used fake investment platforms to deceive potential investors, especially from Romania. The criminal activity began in 2022.
In August, as part of Operation Deep Fake, Moldovan and Romanian authorities carried out 60 searches in homes and offices, including four call centers in Chisinau, Ialoveni and Ocnita. Two more illegal offices were recently identified. The group members posed as representatives or brokers of fictitious companies and used manipulation techniques to convince victims to invest in cryptocurrency and other assets through the platforms they created.
On November 28, the police, with the support of BPDS Fulger, carried out searches that identified 99 people involved in fraud in countries such as Romania, Italy, Turkey and the Francophone regions. 72 mobile phones, 78 system units, personal documents, bank cards and various IT equipment were seized.
The preliminary damage exceeds 20 million lei, and the daily income of the criminal group is estimated at 120,000 dollars. The investigation is ongoing to identify other victims and to make a final assessment of the damage caused. All persons are presumed innocent until the final court decision.
