Can't say I'm self taught...first language was c++ in high school.  Everything else after that I've normally bought a book (ie introduction to <xyz programming language>) , skimmed over it to get a basic understanding, then picked up the rest through examples online and by looking at other people's code.  Stack Overflow and GitHub are great places to see how other people have solved similar problems that you might be working on.

I always tell people it's best if you have an actual project or problem to solve and force yourself to use that language.  After it's working, then try to make it better.  If you just go by online courses you will get bored with them pretty quick.

After a while of using a specific language, I normally buy other books that cover more advanced topics and actually read them.  It's almost like you hit a plateau in your skills / knowledge of something, then picking up a good book helps take you to another level.

Good luck with the learning.
