I admit I've gotten a bit sick of sitcoms to entertain me during Covid. And I've replaced that with lighter mystery shows, current ones, all of which (for whatever reason) feature at least one female lead. What they have in common besides that is that they're not heavy drama. There's amusing banter and pretty-good mysteries (and some murders) that keep you guessing. They're available all over on sites, links, subs, etc. But I also mentioned a few easy ways to watch them. These are the ones I've been watching:
"Frankie Drake Mysteries" -- Set in the 1920s in Toronto -- Frankie Drake and her partner, Trudy, run a detective business. There are two other lead ladies as well. The period art direction is great. There's quite a bit of sexism and some racism that these ladies have to overcome, considering the time period. Occasionally, there's some real-life historical content, like Ernest Hemingway showing up. If you're a Canuck or use a VPN, it's available for free on CBC Gem: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6881870
"Private Eyes" -- Angie, Cindy Sampson, runs a detective agency and by some pretense, Jason Priestley as Matt Shade, an ex hockey player, ends up as her partner. Fun ensues. It takes place in Toronto primarily. The mysteries are good and there's lots of fun banter: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5722298
"Nancy Drew" -- This is a re-imagining of those books for sure. Nancy and her various friends work at the Bayside Claw. There's an ongoing mystery and other sub-mysteries too. There's a horror element and it's surprisingly clever with solid performances: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10313176/
"The Mallorca Files" -- Through some pretense, a Brit police detective and a German police detective work for the police department in Palma on Mallorca. Silly I know. But the two leads have chemistry and so there's good banter. The mysteries are always good and they travel all over Mallorca and it's gorgeous. If you sign up for the BBC iPlayer, you can watch it for free. You just need a VPN (if you aren't a Brit) and a made-up Brit address as I recall. When it asks if you have a certificate, you say "Yes": https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9204128
"Miss Scarlet and the Duke" -- Set in 19th-century London. Miss Scarlet tries to be taken seriously as a detective, which is difficult considering the time period. Although he's not technically her partner, she ends up working quite a bit with a Scotland Yard detective. There's also lots of banter and once again, good mysteries. The period art direction is great also: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8270592
"Magnum, P.I." (Remake) -- In this remake, Higgins is a woman and she and Magnum have plenty of banter and solve a lot of mysteries in Hawaii. There are sidekicks and great locations on the islands and two gorgeous Dobermans: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7942796
I'm always looking for other shows of this type. If you know one, please post it. I'd appreciate it.
