Facebook (or Meta or whichever the fuck you call it) is back in the news this time for spying on Snapchat users.
Back in 2016 when Snapchat was a threat to Facebook, the zuck wanted to gain insights into their competitor. se he sent out this email
Later, Facebook hired Onavo, a company they acquired in 2013 with a history of data collection, for this purpose. Ironically, their project to spy on snapchat was codenamed "GhostBusters."
Anyway, their scheme was to offer paid surveys, but there was a catch. To participate, users had to install a root certificate on their phones. This certificate wasn't just any permission slip, it was a golden ticket to all the encrypted traffic on their device. Once they had this access with Snapchat and so the data coming, they went after even bigger fish: YouTube and Amazon. And when they got caught Facebook acted all innocent, like, "Come on, guys, it's us! Of course we were gonna do it for other apps too!
