well basic googling the detection name + behaviour of the tool what causing that detection like if due to obfuscator or some crack dll it is showing detections and etc etc....

a basic knowledge about how that tool is working and what domains it is connecting when we run exe file... u can use something like wireshark for that network inspection , basically if tool has no internet connectivity it is safe always.. and if it has internet connectivity do check what ip and domain it is connectiog with.

if connection to official domains of the tool its ok, if connecting to some other unknown domains that dont have any work to do with tool then its infected... and your data is being transmitted or stole by that url...

there are many ways to check it tool is really safe to use or not.... manually analysing all above points..it do take time a little bit but good at end..
