The Telegram messenger is a huge success among criminals, especially in Southeast Asia. This is the conclusion made by experts from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in their report “Transnational Organized Crime and the Convergence of Cyber Fraud, Underground Banking and Technological Innovation: The Changing Threat Landscape.”
Analysts emphasized that they received data from thousands of Telegram channels that are on the other side of the law. In them they discovered numerous organized criminal communities based, judging by the languages used and indirect data, precisely in the Asian region. In this regard, the UN came to the conclusion that the messenger has become a haven for influential criminals who, with its help, expand the gray segments of the economy.
Specific specializations include providers of unlicensed services (including foreign exchange), carders and developers of various malware and programs for creating deepfakes. It is noted that all channels studied are characterized by a low level of content moderation or its complete absence.
