The open-source Tor Project and Tails have announced a merger. According to a post on the Tor website, this will help the teams work together to combat the threats of digital surveillance and censorship on the internet.

"We feel like we're coming home after years of working independently," a Tails representative said of the decision.
The key goals of the merger are to strengthen protection against surveillance and censorship on the Internet, simplify collaboration between projects and reduce the cost of their administration, improve educational programs for users, expand opportunities for activists, journalists and anyone who needs safety on the Internet, as well as integrate resources and increase recognition of Tails through the Tor platform. The new team will be led by two existing managers - Isabelle Rafalski from the Tor Project and Ruth Steinberger from Tails.

It is noted that the teams have long been helping each other work on protecting users. The first joint project was implemented back in 2015. In fact, the Tor Project develops the tools necessary to ensure anonymity, and Tails, which is a continuation of the Incognito operating system, provides a distribution that helps users remain invisible on the network. It also blocks connections that it considers non-anonymous and encrypts user data.
