Apple prohibits pirated apps from being published on its store. However, hidden features in seemingly innocuous apps like games are bypassing the App Store’s protections, offering users access to pirated movies and TV shows. The group offered instructions on how to unlock them to about 400,000 users.

According to Taiwan’s Criminal Police Bureau, “two well-known internet celebrities” provided tutorials on how to activate hidden features in the apps, as well as links to download them. They allowed users to install apps like Multiple Choices and Shapes Find the Difference from the App Store. This allowed them to access content owned by a member of the Overseas Content Distribution Association, a Japanese anti-piracy group also known as CODA.

The members of the pirate group were identified as three men, aged 73, 62, and 80. Police found 53 articles published on the website's backend, 25 illegal video apps, and seized two USB sticks, an iPad, a smartphone, and a memory card from the hackers.

The unnamed copyright owner behind the complaint estimates the market value of the infringed content at NT$600 million ($18.5 million).

All three suspects were arrested on suspicion of violating the Copyright Act. The case has been forwarded to the Tainan and Taichung County Prosecutors' Offices for further investigation.
