Former Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for stealing and sharing classified military information over the Discord platform.
The 22-year-old, a member of the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Ottis Air Force Base in Massachusetts, joined the Air Force in September 2019. He spent the first few years of his career working on cyber defense, but later began viewing material he did not have clearance to access. Teixeira then began posting the data online, including on Discord, where he was an active participant in gaming chats.
The information he posted included U.S. and NATO plans, details of U.K. and U.S. personnel involved in military operations, and information about China’s drone program. Prosecutors said Teixeira’s actions caused “exceptionally grave harm” to U.S. national security. Court documents said Teixeira posted classified information to impress his online friends and stroke his ego.
The investigation found that Teixeira initially copied classified data by hand, then moved on to printing documents on a rarely used printer. In his free time, he administered his own Discord server with about 25 participants, where topics of massacres and political crimes were discussed.
Despite realizing the illegality of his actions and receiving regular departmental training on how to handle classified information, Teixeira continued to post data online. The leak attracted widespread public attention when the documents began to spread outside of Discord — first on other servers, then on 4chan and other platforms. Some files had deliberately distorted data, which only worsened the situation.
After the leak was reported by the media, Teixeira tried to cover his tracks: he urged chat participants to delete all materials, then deleted his account and destroyed the hard drives, which were later found in a trash bin near his home. The arrest took place in April 2023 after Discord gave Teixeira's address to investigators.
Teixeira pleaded guilty to six counts of illegally possessing and transmitting classified national security information. A federal judge in Boston sentenced Teixeira to 15 years in prison and three years of probation. FBI Director Christopher Wray said the sentence should serve as a warning to anyone with access to classified information: "betraying that trust will have serious consequences."
