What happened to the social part of MMOs

I feel that the current mmorpgs are missing the social part in all their designs. Sure, there are the dungeons that you run with someone but most of the time you just run them through dungeon finder and you barely interact with the people.
Games like GW2 and Teso have public events, but those do not feel like a social activity either.
Old games were a lot more social or is it just me? Content was getting harder really fast and you were forced to party at mid levels so you had all sorts of social interactions.
