Basically if it's still a hard drive then the data can not be "wiped" it is just not the nature of how memory works it can only be over written and the over write can still leak the data easily for example military grade wiping of a hard drive doesn't do anything to complicated it simply overwrites the hard drive several times with a variety of complicated types of data, And so the easiest solution if you don't have technical know how is to take others advice and destroy the evidence.
I will add on the other side of the argument it cost the US government millions of dollars to have Israeli hackers unlock a single Iphone and all Iphones do use memory encryption by default anyway so perhaps simply restoring the phone would be a good enough solution for you.
