Are modern games too easy?

I recently went back and started X-wing alliance again and holy hell, I have had so much difficulty with it... despite playing Squadrons weekly since it came out, and playing other flight sims extensively. Which leads to my question: are modern games just... easy? Simplified to the point of not requiring skill? Or am I just getting worse with age?

I'd love any examples people have to contribute to the conversation, too.

Nah, I wouldn't say that. I have great examples, such as Doom Eternal. And most games nowadays look for how much the player will enjoy its adventure, some examples of that are "The witcher 3", "Subnautica" and MUCH, MUCH others. All of these games have difficulty levels too, you can set subnautica to hardcore as an example.

Some games, especially MMOs may be changed to be a lot easier to adhere to casual players requests/complaints such as smaller/simpler talent trees, and easier/nerfed boss mechanics. As for most non MMOs I don't think they have really gotten easier with time. It's just a matter of what you search for, as every developer will have a different perspective of what is too hard or too easy. Search for Souls-like games and you get punishing or unforgiving mechanics usually right off the bat, but search for a survival sandbox or strategy game and you will most likely be eased into any difficulty or challenge presented in the game.

Don't think so. You have all kinds of offers.
See Dark Souls. A good example is Fallout 4 where you can go in a survival mode, or Metro with the ranger mode.
I always play my games in normal mode. Don't have much time, and I don't want to prove anything to anyone, I want a fair challenge that doesn't become frustration.

I think the player experience nowadays is so much more cusutomazible to a point in which a lot of people don't know or chose the right difficulty/experience for them

I think they become complicated but easy. Especially I get overwhelmed by the size of the most open world games' maps and usually their boring easy fetch quests makes me bored.
