I doubt it, as far as I know you have to run one of the files that is compressed inside of that archive in order to get infected but there might be some exploits I Don't know of

"opening and extracting" I am pretty sure that you won't catch malware when you open a .rar. But when you extract it, it's a different story. I am 100% sure you can catch malware/virus. Think about it, even opening a single excel file can fuck your whole system up
