In few days it will be 2020 and most people are still using Discord. Which alternative is great?
Few people also use Jabber aka XAMPP which can be used with OTR to make 1:1 chat but it is really oldschool and not user friendly.
Telegram went really popular even tho its chat system is really not user friendly, i am not sure telegram is the most secure or even use 1:1 (end to end).
There is Matrix which is open source and really good with its Riot client. You can chose for 1:1 or not therefore its client is really hard to use for beginners.
Keybase? it is doing a bit of everything so i am not seeing myself using it as a real-time-chat.
So what will you do in 2020?
1. Stick to Discord like your 13 yo boyfriend Kappa
2. Go the oldschool way with Jabber
3. Try the lazyway to chat with Telegram
4. Switch to Matrix and do what ever you need
5. Do a bit of everything with Keybase
