I don't think complete privacy is possible in today's day and age. It's well known that TOR is compromised, and given how easy it is to set up shell companies with a little $$$, it can be expected that at least some companies offering privacy services such as VPNs are run by governments. I know a lot of VPNs make claims about how they're guaranteed to be secure because they're located in a country that doesn't care about US laws, but, those same countries are easy to set up companies in under an assumed alias or through another company based out of an island and so those claims are effectively worthless.

A VPN will give you privacy from the private industry, I can believe that. But from gov't? No way.

VPN is for the naughty boys of the internet, it just provides a sense of security and does in fact, protect you from some people online but only to an extent.
