Operating System: Adélie Linux
The independent Linux distribution strives for full POSIX compliance and compatibility with a wide range of platforms without sacrificing features and usability.
With this claim, Adélie Linux differs significantly from the current trend.
Another feature that sets the project apart is its focus on free software and compliance with the ethical standards of the free software idea.
The installation is performed by a self-developed system called Horizon, which incorporates the experience of other distributions and is as simple as it is fast and error-free. The use of the C library musl, a series of optimizations of the Linux kernel and decades of experience in system programming allow for an efficient, resource-saving and user-friendly operating system that, for example, requires less than 384 MB of RAM for the current desktop KDE. Adélie Linux only includes open source and free software in its repository, giving users the assurance of never being subject to copyright or patent restrictions.
The repository currently (Oct. 2020) contains more than 2000 application packages and is constantly being expanded but also updated with the most stable versions. No maximum number is planned, as the project believes that users should have as much choice as possible.
The project has survived the initial difficulties. The distribution is not based on any other, but has done all the development work itself. In October 2020, the second release candidate for version 1.0 was published, which is an impressively good result. One has the opportunity to "be there from the beginning" and this opportunity has not existed for a long time. Behind Adélie Linux is a professional team of developers, a dedicated community and, above all, a philosophy without commercial inclusions.
