Proxy query. Help needed

Im just learning about proxies , sorry if this is the wrong section to post in. Should I be using a vpn along with a proxy or does one cancel the other out. I want to be totally anobymous while browsing but not sure if I need both. Thanks so much in advance if you could mail me or reply with as much info as possible.
