I’ve been playing 4x and grand strategy games for a long time and I’ve noticed that for all of the games I play, when I’m learning then, I really dislike the idea of “jumping right into a game.”
Not that it’s bad advice, I think it can be really good, I just really hate going into a game, and taking lots of time setting up long term strategies with the idea that I may not understand some type of mechanic. I’m not even someone who necessarily tries to min/max if I understand the game really well. I do like to play suboptimally for role play and fun purposes, I just like to know that I’m doing something suboptimally, rather than being in the dark.
I always watch hours of tutorials, let’s plays, scour the wiki if a game has it, ask questions on forums, and play little test games where i experiment on unclear mechanics before I start my first “real” game.
Does anyone else play this way? I think it may be a little insane, and im not sure if anyone else does it. Just wondering.
