The Military Intelligence Service (MIVD) has discovered that a unit of the Russian military intelligence service called GROe has hacked routers belonging to Dutch people. MIVD director Swillens explains in a conversation with de Volkskrant that these are routers from private individuals and small and medium-sized companies.
'Global attack network'
Once hacked, the devices are part of a 'global attack network', NOS writes. This network, also known as a botnet, can then be used to destroy or paralyze the network of ministries. But also for espionage, influence and sabotage purposes. These are not home-and-kitchen routers, but advanced ones that are usually used by small businesses.
By using bad passwords and accepting the default settings, the routers should be fairly easy to hack. The MIVD discovered the hacks after tips from abroad, after which they quickly discovered several Dutch IP addresses. It is unknown whether the attack has anything to do with the war.
Unit 74455
Well known: the source of the hacks. That would be 'Unit 7455', part of GRU, the military intelligence service of the Russians. The group is also known as Sandworm or BlackEnergy, and is considered by many to be the most dangerous hacking group in the world.
To illustrate: 7455 already cut power in large parts of Ukraine with attacks in 2015 and 2016 and disrupted the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in South Korea in 2018.
