This guide is based on my observations and experiences during my time in cracked, hope it helps people to make their deals safer and ultimately result in a more trusting community

to make this guide as simple and understandable as possible, i will refrain from typing unnecessary details and represent the guide as a mirror of my experience dealing with scammers and legit sellers by providing the signs to look for to identify each:

Good signs
  • reputation / vouches on forum
  • aged profile on forum (6 months+)
  • keeps an active status and has more than 100 threads and likes on forum
  • talks in a firm and calm manner
  • descriptive about the service / product they provide
  • concerning about the terms of the deal
  • helpful in clarifying questions and concerns of the buyer
Alerting signs
  • low reputation / vouches
  • profile is no older than 3 months
  • low activity on forum
  • posts and threads are only about their service / product
  • exclusively accepts payment methods that offer no chargeback / dispute system
Bad signs
  • no forum profile
  • asks for payment in the first 5 messages
  • the price they offer their service / product for is significantly higher / lower than its value and / or other sellers offering the same service / product
  • provides no description of the service / product they are offering
  • refrains from providing any kind of proof
  • refrains from dealing through middleman
  • attempts to insult / ridicule / mock for any reason

good signs are not to be relied on but they can indicate that person you are dealing with is somewhat more trustworthy than a person that doesn't show these signs

alerting signs indicate that you should be extra cautious while dealing with the person in question

bad signs indicate that the risk of dealing with the person in question is high and you should refrain from dealing with them

you can use these signs to evaluate the legitimacy of the person you are dealing with in first glance, in addition to these signs, i will conclude this guide with the analysis i made of the scammers i dealt with over time, this analysis can be used to get a better understanding of bad actors and their practices

i categorize scammers behaviors into 3 groups of overall illuminating states of character: Dumb, Sophisticated, Lazy
a scammer can be in any of these states at any given time and change between them either periodically or as a strategical tactic
each of these groups have a set of paradigmatic behaviors that scammers of each group follow / illuminate:

Dumb
  • has poor communication skills
  • overly confident about their service / product
  • overly concerned about their payment
  • radically changes the terms of the deal / payment specifications
Sophisticated
  • normal-good commutation skills
  • overly descriptive about their service / product
  • overly confident about their reputation and status as a seller
  • persuasive on making the deal
  • acts as a friend / offers tips and / or insight
Lazy
  • talks in bits and un-finished sentences
  • reads messages and answers with a delay
  • overly confident about their reputation and status as a seller
  • refrains from providing details and proof
  • attempts to insult / ridicule / mock for any reason
here are a few behaviors that can be present in all 3 of these groups:
  • always in a hurry
  • offers intimidating discounts / gifts
  • doesn't accept middleman
  • accepts middleman and doesn't go through with it for any reason
  • accepts middleman but only ones they know / provide
  • talks about being part of a group / having skilled and / or reputable partners / friends
  • forwards the payment to another person

there may be a few more points / behaviors that i missed, i will try to update this thread to include them, feel free to share your feedback
