Can be for any of the console platforms (Gameboy, Switch, Playstation, etc) 

My personal favorite was Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Crystal. Some of the best music and sprites in the games. 

The new ones are a bit too sophisticated and I tend to enjoy GameSharking them to breeze through it.

Pokemon Yellow was by far the best ones and way ahead of its time. I agree with you.
The new generations are basically endless expansion of the license to extend the profits made by the Pokemon/Nintendo brand.
No real valuable innovation happened since then, just inter-generational trends and will to buy to follow the wave I guess.

Pokemon Yellow, without a doubt. I think a close second would be Pokemon Emerald. I put atleast 1000+ hours into each of these games. I don't really play the new games for the "story", mostly just to compete online.

I've had a hard time keeping up with all the new Pokemon games in the series. The last one I thoroughly enjoyed was Omega Ruby, so that's the one I'd probably say is my favorite.

Love Pokemon Rubin not Bad, the modded pokemon Roms are good too with emulator on PC.

Pokemon gold and i would say its my favorite since its where the love of pokemon started i would say. I remember buying the game and it was a used copy so when i launched the game it already had entei and charizard and more at lvl 100 xD.
Reset it after few days cus i was not sure what to do. All the new ones just look meh to me last one i played was diamond & pearl.
