I agree.  It's demoralizing.  Now that I'm trying to contribute more I realize I should have given more appreciation to those who have helped me in the past.  I now try to make it a point of liking threads or posts I find useful, kind, funny, or informative, and giving +reps when I see I've liked someone's posts multiple times.
