Usually side-quests and stuff apart from the main story are interesting and take you to places that the main quest does not. The game doesn't make a good job when you only want to follow the main storyline. It gets a bit boring and repetitive if you focus too much on the main stuff at the beginning of the game. Later on it's not much of an issue since the story starts flowing better. Now talking about the RPG elements, the game is an action rpg and we see more about the action part. RPG elements exist but the game is not primarily an rpg, and the playstyle choices are limited.

It's definitely an RPG. It's just that instead of making your own character and "role" like in other games such as Elder Scrolls or MMO's, you're just playing the "role" of an already established character. Personally, I've done 2 full playthroughs and am planning on doing a third soon, but if they do it right I'd love a new game in the series where you can create your own witcher or mage or similar character.
A storyline of rebuilding the Witcher schools would be a cool concept. |
