Many people consider this film as the weakest one from the Cornetto trilogy. And I've never personally understood why. Although Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz are really decent, clever, and fun movies...
(although their style of humor never really hit me, but that's just me)
The World's End is just different. For me, it's a deep and personal story over everything else. I first watched this movie when I was close to graduating from high school, and had a few very close high school friends I had known for years. And I remember my thoughts of anxiety about college, fear of losing touch with my friends, not knowing the future. It felt like the world could literally end in some sense. And the movie hit me hard then.
And years later it hits even harder when you realize that the world really ended for Gary after graduating.
This movie is also very witty and clever, the soundtrack is amazing, and it's a pleasure to rewatch it and notice some new details you haven't noticed previously. But overall, it's the overall story of friendship and reconnecting that always hits me the hardest. No other movie ever hit me like that in an emotional sense. It's one of my favorite movies not just from the Cornetto trilogy. It's one of my favorite movies ever filmed.
However, if you know of any other good movies about similar themes of losing friendships - please write them in comments, that would be interesting to see.
