For someone just starting to delve into more robust and complicated courses in cybersecurity with an eye towards earning internationally recognized certifications, I recommend beginning with foundational certifications that build a strong base of knowledge. These certifications are designed to introduce you to key concepts and practices in the field of cybersecurity, making them ideal for beginners. Here are a few certifications that are widely respected and can serve as a great starting point:

  • CompTIA Security+: This certification covers a wide range of introductory topics in cybersecurity, including network security, compliance, operational security, vulnerabilities, and threat management. It's a great first certification for those new to the field, as it provides a broad overview of cybersecurity principles and practices.

  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP): While CISSP is often seen as more advanced, starting with the mindset of eventually achieving it can be beneficial. It covers areas such as risk management, security operations, software development security, and more. It's globally recognized and highly respected in the field.

  • Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH): This certification introduces ethical hacking and penetration testing skills. It's designed for those interested in understanding how to identify vulnerabilities in systems from a cybersecurity defense perspective.

  • Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate: This certification focuses on the operational aspects of cybersecurity and prepares candidates for roles in security operations centers (SOCs). It covers security concepts, security monitoring, host-based analysis, network intrusion analysis, and security policies and procedures.

  • CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+): This is another certification from CompTIA that focuses on the analytical aspect of cybersecurity. It covers vulnerability management, threat detection, and response, as well as the tools and technologies used for security analysis.

Each of these certifications requires dedicated study and preparation, but they are all well-regarded in the industry and can significantly enhance your knowledge and employability in cybersecurity roles. Begin with the one that aligns best with your interests and career goals, and use it as a stepping stone to further your education and certification in the field.
