The employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia together with their Moscow colleagues detained a suspect in the theft of citizens' savings using cryptomats.

"It has been preliminarily established that the criminals installed more than 20 cryptomats in several regions of the Russian Federation. The victims, having fallen under the influence of telephone scammers, deposited their money into the terminals and thus transferred it to the crypto wallets of the organizers of the criminal scheme. The leader of the group, a native of Ukraine, later took the cash deposited by citizens from the cryptomats. Then he brought it to an exchange office, where he was credited with cryptocurrency in an equivalent amount. He transferred it to his curators from Ukraine, keeping a percentage of the transaction as income for himself," said the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Irina Volk.

Among the victims is a member of the SVO, who was in Moscow undergoing rehabilitation after being wounded. Following the instructions of strangers, he transferred more than 2.5 million rubles to so-called safe accounts. Presumably, over 150 people suffered from the actions of the scammers.

“During the operational search activities, the police detained the suspects in Moscow. During the searches, an administrator console was found on one of the organizer’s computers, from which the cryptomats were controlled. The operatives of the Criminal Code of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia took measures to centrally block the functioning network. The terminals located in Moscow, large sums of money, mobile phones and other items of evidentiary value were seized.

An investigator of the Investigative Department of the Internal Affairs Directorate for the Northern Administrative District of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Moscow is investigating a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. One defendant was taken into custody, the rest were given a coercive measure in the form of an obligation to appear.

Currently, police officers are carrying out measures aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the illegal activity,” said Irina Volk.
