hello, I always wanted to be a programmer but I never knew where to start
i know a lot of basics about programming and how syntaxes work but i never learned 100% one programming language. i never knew how to use my 'knowledge' and make something that will motivate me to keep going. i'd like to start with python and build maybe a twitch follow bot. what stuff do i need to learn and where? thanks

I do not know programming, maybe try and identify a particular task or objective you want to accomplish and learn to code towards that goal? For example, I have a bunch of books that I would like to gather into a database that I can search through and modify at my own will. Before I got lazy, I was in the process of doing it in Java Netbeans. Its really beginning stuff, but if your having trouble pursuing it i would start with a textbook that progressively introduces more advanced materials as you process. with that said....i never did manage to start learning jack, but good luck to you.

You. Don't. Start. By. Making. A. Game.
That is the worst advice ever. If you wanna start learning programming, you should start on a smaller scale with maybe a checker or smth.

Is better to understand what you want to do before you learn programming. As far as I know programming is very broad, you could do a lot after you learn but knowing what you wants narrow down on the stuff that you going to learn and don't waste time.

Why do you want to be a programmer? You want to build your career as a programmer or it is just a hobby for your free time? Moreover, you cannot learn 100% a language, since programming languages change overtime. May just pick one that you feel comfortable and stick with it. Python is a good programming language to start with. Here are some ideas for projects using Python that you can look at.

I strongly disagree - making a game is a really good way to learn.  Just don't make a COMPLICATED game.

The reason why making a game is good is that they have simple rules, you can visualise it in your head and there's usually a lot of help available. Basically, you KNOW what the results should be - if something doesnt work you'll know it, whereas with something like a checker you might not know if you've gone wrong or it's your data set etc. Just keep it simple - make a basic coin flipping game, then move on to a basic text adventure etc. etc.

The only thing I would say is that Unity/etc. is only good if you're interested in gaming. You'll be learning a lot of stuff about 2d/3d movement which isn't really useful for anything else. If you dont just want to make games, start out learning Python - there are tons of tutorials available (learnpythonthehardway is one of the best) and just work your way through them and start doing small projects or games. Each time you do a tutorial try to push it just a little bit further than what the example is.
