By money, do you mean banks? Because the concept of bartering is straight forward. So, you must mean how do banks work, right?

Banks gives loans to people, but banks dont own money. Basicaly they make a money for nothing. Money is just number, but also important to us.

United States is in debt to China as an example (They really are tho). If US prints more money now, the value of the $ will go down. China has analysts that watch the market 24/7 and adjust the rate for their debt too. So basiclly if they print more it has nothing to say, their money will just be worth less.
