It just depends on people's priorities. You don't have to work a 9-5 job necessarily, but it's hard to live without cash. You could work part time, earning the minimum for essentials and spend most your time doing something you enjoy doing. People like nice things though, so they work more. They realize if you commit to working 40 hours a week you get more job security and more money, and people are scared of losing that...so they keep doing it. It becomes vicious cycle of waking up, slaving away, eating sleeping, and repeating all over again, day after day...just to earn a buck.
